Coco
lumber has some interesting characteristics. Coco-palms that
grow close to the seashore develop a particularly dark lumber, similar
in color to rosewood due to sea salt in the earth. Only the outer
parts of the log can be used for manufacture of our products as
the inner parts are too soft. However harder coco lumber is heavier
than oak and when completely dry can be difficult to put a nail
through therefore we prefer to use fresh lumber, which can be processed
with energy saving hand tools.
As
an example, once our Easter eggs have been roughly carved out they
are carefully dried, finished with sandpaper and polished with bees
wax. A beautiful pattern of long lines and a many dots is visible
where the lumber's long and stringy fibers are broken at the surface.

The lumber's structure is very striking.

In
order to protect the environment we use naturally fallen palm
trees wherever possible. So far we have been able to find enough
of them since the typhoon "Durian" hit the island in December
2007.
When
choosing our products, we are currently restricted by the limited
carpentary qualifications of the Mangyan and their further education
is another key goal of the project. To begin with however we must
be careful not to proceed too fast, risking frustration among our
target group so we choose simple but beautiful high quality products
in keeping with minimalist Scandinavian taste.
Later
in line with the project's consolidation, we will establish a machine
carpentry and even produce furniture.

Handcarved Easter eggs approximately 6 cm high.

You won't find two eggs of the same size.

Notice the deep, dark glow of the lumber.
